After receiving ideas from all over the city for a month, finally 6 great ideas are selected for the Social Innovation Camp Hong Kong! All the change makers, if you would like to help them realise these ideas, sign up for the camp.
Building up efficient web-based solutions to social problems, working with tech gurus and social innovators, and making Hong Kong a better place – this must be the coolest way to spend a weekend. And it’s happening on 27-29 Sep, get ready now.
So Here are the top 6 ideas, pick one and make it come true!
1. Short term income generation for refugees and domestic helpers
Both refugees and domestic helpers in HK represent groups of people who may have time, language capabilities and other competencies to spare (e.g. simple computer processing), but due to regulations are not permitted to generate income at all or outside of their helper contracts. Without being free to provide value for others, their economic potential remains constrained – and so therefore their path to financial freedom and self-actualization. In addition, as long as they stop working and upgrading their skill sets, their future prospects remain bleak.
I envision a mobile-focused platform for short term projects structured to make some form of economic value generation possible within regulatory boundaries – e.g. payments or donations to entities that support these groups, made in or outside of Hong Kong. These projects may also involve pre-requisite training or skills acquisition (e.g. translation or computer processing).
2. Appcyclr
An app that allows you to scan your bottled drink and find out the closest recycling bin and gives you points when you check in at them to redeem for more drinks/snacks from participating outlets.
3. Travel Buddies
Travel Buddies is a social network connecting the physically challenged with travelers around the world. Through the use of off-the-shelf hardware such as cell phones and wearable cameras, and custom web-based software, we enable a disabled person to see through the eyes of their avatar on the other side of the world.
4. Rate Your Doctor
If I am hungry and want to eat, I can go to OpenRice.com.
But what if I am sick and need to see a doctor?
RateYourDoctor.com is a web-based information sharing platform for anyone to share their 「doctor experience」 with the world. Patients can comment and rate the service quality, attitude, punctuation, professionalism etc. on the website, while potential patients can visit the website to find out which doctor(s) may be suitable to them.
RateYourDoctor.com (can be an application) is also a potential platform for individuals to share their treatment experience/milestone with others, putting emphasis on how long they waited before obtaining an appointment, and the amount of time they waited to be referred to a specialist in the public healthcare system.
5. EC Point
EC Point is a virtual currency based item and service exchange platform. Each new member get free points which they can use to obtain other people’s unwanted or excess resources. Our points are backed up by the wasted resources (items or services). The more wasted resources in this society, the more points (purchase power) we can issue to our users to consume those wasted resources. In another word, our point system is replacing the function of the existing charities who act as the agent between those who have unwanted resources and those who are in need of those resources.
6.Volunteer me
An app based volunteering platform. Whatever your social cause, you detail it on volunteer me, and locate willing helpers to support you. Individuals log into the app and either detail when they would be free, or pick a cause to support within their time restrictions. (e.g. 3hrs on sat) Once you support a project, you utilise your social networks & invite friends and family to join you, or donate HKD99 in support.
Volunteer me will harness idle people who have the time to spare, but aren’t pro active enough to find a cause, as well those who are time poor, and yet are willing to donate to a cause because a friend or family member is involved.
